Commercial Carnival!

Yesterday I attended a commercial audition and I had a great time.  It was a last-minute audition for which there was little time to prepare but I made the most of it!  I created a quirky sensibility for my character, bedecking her with traits I felt would most imbue her with memorability.  (Of course, I also catered to the specifics provided in the script.)  What I enjoyed about this process was the ease with which she evolved: her development occurred in a quickly-paced but organic manner.  How I wish all characters could be so evolutionarily effortless!

Upon arrival I was informed I was to be paired with actor “Aaron”.  However, he seemed to be late in arriving.  The actor with whom I was eventually matched turned out to be a wonderful scene partner: calm, professional, prepared, reactive and friendly.  I warned him that my actions in the audition room would be larger than those of our rehearsal and he seemed grateful to know.  We were the second audition pair of the day and entered the room to find the casting director and the casting associate seated behind a table and an appropriately-positioned camera operator.  The CD indicated they would “roll on rehearsal”, which was fine.  I inquired if I could enter from outside the frame and was rebuffed.  No matter!  We “rehearsed” and I went to town with my slightly-over-the-top-singing-and-celebratory identity.  The in-house gang seemed to love it and, upon completion, looked at one another saying, “That was great! We don’t need another one.”  My scene partner seemed to feel as I did–that our read went well–and he even offered me a fist bump once we’d left the room as confirmation.

The turn-around on this audition is quick and the hiring should happen today or possibly tomorrow at the latest.  Even if I don’t get the gig, I feel confident about and comfortable with the work I presented.  I’m pleased to have enjoyed the experience and the process.
