Many of you know I have a personal tricolon: I go. I do it. I leave. And, sincerely, I try to abide by this in all cases–auditions, performances and gigs. However, recently my memory has betrayed me and how it irks me!
A couple of weeks ago, I auditioned for a big commercial. As with every other audition opportunity, I prepared meticulously. Ahem. I cannot tell you, though, how much I hated one particular line. Yes. Hated. I would meander around my apartment in rehearsal, saying to myself, Ugh! I hate this line. I hate this line. And I did. Of all the lines in the copy, there was one that–for the life of me–I could not figure out and how I detested it. How to deliver it? How did it fit into the message of the spot? What did the copywriters intend? What was I missing? With the clock ticking down, I knew I could only do my best, whatever that was … Read more »
This has been a very good week–the best I can recall in a while. Here’s the low-down:
Monday: I did yoga all day on the set of a very eclectic indie flick. I can’t wait for it to come out! It should be quite cute.
Tuesday: I was asked–last-minute–to work on a major feature film that was filming only three blocks from my apartment. The best commute to work ever!
Wednesday: An audition for a major TV series for a bit part. I did my best to prepare and study, but still left with that ambiguous, How did I do? feeling.
Thursday: Was asked to sing–wait for it–Wagner! Can you believe it?! My voice type never sings Wagner. Though this will be a reduced arrangement of the “Ride of the Valkyries“, it in no way diminishes the fact that it is Wagner and I’ll be singing it.
Friday: While finalizing details of a major audition occurring today, … Read more »
Last week I was called in for a print audition for the first time in a while. The casting director was kind to think of me in and it was nice to become reacquainted. Even more pleasing, the CD welcomed me by name while I signed in! I had forgotten how long the wait can be for these castings, though, relative to commercial castings. While I waited I found myself making comparisons. Was I too tall? Definitely not. Too short? Possibly. Everyone else, excepting the toddler I saw, was at least five inches taller than me. Too conservative looking? Though I know they were casting for “real people“, given the descriptions provided in advanced, I made some strong choices that would help to age me “up”. They, perhaps, make me look quite conservative, too. I also wore glasses, which is something I don’t typically do, because the client was seeking bookish types. Was my hair the right color? Who knows?! I was the … Read more »
I received a phone call last week.
“Hey! How are you? Are you available to work on [insert name of major network TV show here]?”, the voice inquired.
My heart leapt. ”Yes”, I responded happily. ”I can be available!”
“Oh, that’s great. We’ll need to you do stand-in and it’s perfect because you look just like her. We’re only waiting on her height.”
“Oh…alright”, I answered as normally as possible, my heart sinking. I knew exactly what was going on.
“We’ll call you later with the details.” Click.
Flashback to the previous week…
I’m nervous. I’ve slept as much as possible. I’m memorized, have an outfit packed neatly in an unassuming bag, a headshot in hand and I’m prepared to ride a bus. I’m on my way to audition for a guest-star role on [insert name of major network TV show here]. My mental checklist has been reviewed to the point of tatters and I’m certain I’ve got everything I need.
Once in the audition room, … Read more »
