Universal Incongruous

The universe can be a baffling place.  It never ceases to amaze me that I hardly ever hear from those auditions in which I feel most confident and yet I receive calls from those auditions I leave feeling bewildered and flop-like.

This weekend I had two film auditions.  The first I left feeling happy but as though I hadn’t been given enough time with the script.  The group running the audition was friendly-looking and organized with a plan, but the audition was conducted not unlike a visit to a medical clinic.  I entered, was asked to sign in and complete a form, was handed the script and told to sit and wait.  Very soon thereafter a door opened and a voice called out, “Next!”.  I entered.  After slating for the camera as requested, an individual in the corner surprised me by talking.  It took a moment for me to realize we had begun a scene and I had to inquire about which scene I was reading … Read more »

Amiss

Earlier this past week I had a callback audition for a gig with exciting potential: a national commercial for a major retail chain.  I was very pleased to be called back for this second round, which was conducted via satellite feed with some friendly folks in California.

The talent had been explicitly instructed to arrive before 1 PM, with 1 PM being the time when the Boston satellite feed would begin.  I arrived twelve minutes early to discover I was the last of the six of us to arrive and was most pleased to see the nice actor I had read with previously.  Seeing him was an encouraging sign for me, confirming the relatively good feeling I had upon leaving the first audition.

We waited and waited and waited.  In silence.  At 1:30 PM the satellite feed began and it seemed–based on overheard conversation–that the client had opted to go with the New York feed first, which explained the delay.

Call me crazy red! Part II

Last evening I received a voicemail message inviting me to today’s “young mom” callback. What distinguished the voicemail message for this callback from others was the addendum near the end, “Oh, and if you could bring your mother with you, that would be great.” Bring my mother? Really? Apparently, they were seeking someone 20 years my senior who looked like me to play my mother, but their files had turned up nothing promising. Having me bring my mother was their next best plan. My mom was not available.

I walked into today’s callback expecting to see “young moms” and infants in the waiting area. Instead, perplexingly, I saw many real moms and dads sitting next to their pre-teen kids. Boys and girls of all colors and shades, including a redhead, were auditioning. There were also two infants. I saw no other “young moms”. I signed in, had my photo taken again, and searched for some information somewhere that might enlighten me about this spot. Unsurprisingly, … Read more »

Call me crazy red!

Just when I begin to doubt myself the craziest stuff happens!  I got a callback for that “young mom” audition I went on last week.  In no way did I expect to be called.  I’ve been asked to return later today.  So, look for an update to this post later, summarizing or, perhaps, detailing all the nitty-gritty callback details.  Hopefully infant spit-up will not be a part of it.
