Say what?

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to read a radio spot for a major client.  In the course of that read, I wasn’t exactly pleased with one of my takes and, without thinking, I let it be known through a series of unattractive vocalizations.  Upon request to have the clip sent to me, engineer Mike kindly obliged.  Appropriately, he titled the clip “Alecia Batson-Ewww”.  If you listen carefully below, you can even hear Mike and the client laughing–through the glass.

Beginning Anew

It’s a new year (and a new decade!) and I am prepared to admit that I have fallen into a blog slump.  I became so busy in December and January with performances and auditions that I didn’t have time to blog (or didn’t make time to blog?) which defeats the purpose of even having or maintaining a blog.  And, in recent weeks, I’ve been completely lacking the motivation to blog despite the seven blog drafts I have stored.  So, I begin anew!  To propel myself out of these blog doldrums, I’d like to comment on a remark my good friend, unbelievably talented voice over artist and author Mo Lotman, made.

Mo remarked of my blog that it “might not serve you well in terms of branding yourself as a ‘professional auditionee’. To me that implies that you don’t actually get parts and also that you don’t already have a career as an actress, which you do…” … Read more »

Audition Diary

Dear Diary,

I’ve had some auditions this past week and I’m feeling confused about things.

Monday: Another casting director called me last-minute to audition for a lead role in another feature film coming to the area.  I really liked the character and her role in the story so I spent considerable time defining her and making conscious choices.  Based on what I knew, I even anticipated … Read more »

Audition-a-rama

The title of this post tells all. I have auditions coming up these next few days and much to prepare. First is some Shakespeare, which I love. I’ve no idea why, but understanding and memorizing the works of Shakespeare comes naturally to me. His writings are so witty, economical, illustrative and intelligent that they seem to stick easily in my brain. I’ve been walking around town for days muttering Shakespeare’s verse to myself and, no doubt, there are people who’ve seen me and thought me mad.  And that’s fine.  Though this be madness, yet there is method in’t.

There are also samples of industrial video text to interpret.  These always seem tricky to me because they’re so heavily scripted, yet one must appear natural, engaging, professional and representative of the product in question.  And sometimes it can be challenging to identify with said product, especially if it’s a durable or intangible good like a 3-in-1 printer, a series of refrigerators … Read more »
